Work with equine nutrition expert, Sheldene, conveniently via email to get to the bottom of your horses’ nutrition. You will be provided with a bespoke feeding plan to suit your budget and your horse’s needs. Working with certain commercial feeds or raw ingredients available to you, Sheldene will formulate a ration for your horse and supply you with a recipe for a supplement to supply the missing nutrients your horse needs.

How It Works

Download and fill out an Assessment Form which will provide me with information I need on your horse’s breed, age, work status and current feed
Once I receive the completed form, I will invoice you and send any questions I have about the diet
Using the information provided, I use NRC figures to find your horses daily requirements
Next I analyse your horses full diet and compare it to the daily needs and making adjustments in feed where necessary, I formulate a supplement to balance the full ration
I send you a full feeding plan including feed and forage amounts for varying work levels and give you a recipe for a supplement which you can make up or I can make and courier to you
I help you to find ingredients you need and make minor changes to the diet until it suits you and your horse. Minor adjustments are included in the initial cost but major changes may be charged for as an update
I do offer ongoing advice and help with nutritional issues or any queries or questions you may have.

FAQs

My horse eats hay from a round bale so I can’t weigh his daily hay intake – can you still do a diet?

Yes I can but I do need to know how many horses eat the bale, how long it lasts and approximate weight of the bale to work out intake.

My horse is a good doer and receives minimal feed, does he need a supplement?

Yes – horses on minimal feed actually need higher supplement amounts to provide the essential nutrients that are missing in the grazing and hay.

My horse is at a livery yard which won’t change feed brands, can I still do a custom diet?

Yes, while this isn’t always ideal, I can still work out a diet that will balance the diet and provide nutrients that are missing in the feed.

Do you do diets for horses diagnosed or suspected of having any of the following- EMS, Laminitis, IR, PSSM etc?

Yes!

What does a custom diet cost?

The diet itself costs R600 for the first adult horse and R325 per horse thereafter. Breeding and growth diets do cost more and I do also have herd rates so please contact me for these. Supplement costs vary according to what is in them and I can adjust them to suit most budgets so speak to me if you are concerned about costs and I can work with you to meet your horses needs as best we can within your budget.

Does a custom diet mean I have to make my own feed?

No – we work with most commercial feeds and formulate a custom supplement to fill the gaps in the diet. We do also work out home-based diets if the ingredients are available in your area and it is practical for you and the horses to do this.
